Dear Minister Lake,
The Victoria (CRD) Sewage Treatment Issue
I attach herewith a letter to Premier Clark requesting a Canadian independent scientific review of this issue.
As the Minister of Environment with Veterinary Science training I trust you will review this issue and examine the science issues that resulted in the original political decision by the then Minister to order the CRD to plan for land based sewage treatment. It is the opinion of ten Marine Scientists and six public health officials that the decision was not justified on a science basis.
It is suggested that the Royal Society of Canada would be an appropriate independent panel to carry out a “Triple Bottom Line” assessment. There is a precedent for this – the BC Government requested the RSC’s to carry out an independent review in the past when they developed a : Report of the Expert Panel on Science Issues Related to Oil and Gas Activities, Offshore British Columbia (2004).
Ten Marine Scientists are making this request which I fully support.
Yours truly,
Dr Shaun Peck,
CRD Medical Health Officer 1989-1995
Deputy Provincial Health Officer 1995-2004
